Are supersonic flights back?

Actualizado: 30 dic 2019

New York - London in 3 hours. Supersonic aircraft named X-59, prototype designed by Lockheed could make its very first flight in 2021. It would fly at 1500 km/h.

Forecast for 2021? Noise and contamination are the main factors against supersonic flights.

Experimental aircraft by NASA

Concorde. This aircraft might come to your mind if you try to relate X-59 to other aircrafts built in recent history. It was the last commercial aircraft to launch supersonic flights.

The Concorde ended in 2003 and now, more than 15 years later, we can start to imagine on a regular basis long range flights as domestic flights.

Will the project succeed or will it end like the Concorde did?

What we know from X-59 is that it has considerably reduced the noise contamination or even almost dissapeared NASA says. By end of 2020, the final assembly will be finished with the systems integrated.

Only time can say if investments from Lockheed Martin will have a progression in history of supersonic flights.
